Assurant Health formally Fortis Health Insurance

In our opinion Assurant Health is a very good company for temporary medical. In fact, they are one of the top sellers of temporary health insurance in the U.S. In business since 1892, Assurant Health provides health insurance coverage for more than one million people nationwide. Assurant Health develops and provides a wide range of individual medical, small group, short term and student health insurance products, including consumer-choice products such as HSAs and HRAs. Assurant Health is headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, and has operations offices in Minnesota, Idaho and Florida, as well as sales offices across the country. Assurant Health products are issued and underwritten by Fortis Insurance Co., John Alden Life Insurance Co., and Fortis Benefits Insurance Co. Assurant Health.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is a great company, and you pay for the name. We are partial to some of their PPO health plans and their Medicare Supplemental plans. Blue Cross Blue Shield is based out of Chicago Illinois and they are part of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). HCSC is a non-investor-owned mutual insurance company that operates through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield divisions in Illinois, Texas and New Mexico, and several subsidiaries to offer a variety of health and life insurance products and related services to employers and individuals.

Celtic

We like to use Celtic as an alternative for Unicare and Aetna. Celtic's rates are right in line with Aetna, but slightly higher than Unicare. The company is a smaller company, but stable in our opinion. They are rated "A-" (Excellent) by A.M. Best Company. They are also domiciled in Chicago, Illinois. Celtic began operating in 1978 as a broker, insurance and reinsurance company for group life and health coverage. Today, the company has narrowed its focus and holds a strong commitment to the individual health marketplace. The expansive Celtic Product Portfolio includes the CeltiCare Health Plan for individuals and families, the Celtic ValueOne Health Plan, the CelticSaver HSA Health Plan and the Celtic Short-Term Health Plan.

Golden Rule

Golden Rule Insurance Company is a very large, well-established company. We like their individual product because it includes maternity benefits (if you are willing to pay the price). Golden Rule is rated “A” (Excellent) by A.M. Best, and “A+” (Strong) by Standard & Poor’s. They are a major provider of health insurance for individuals, life insurance, and annuities. They have been recognized by Ward Group as one of the 50 Life-Health “Top Performers”-- companies that have done the best job of balancing financial safety, consistency, and performance over the past five years, as reported in Business Insurance (August 23, 2004).
